Guest Post: Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring

For most guys, simply choosing a new pair of pants or shirt is daunting enough, let alone trying to select a ring that carries so much importance for their partner. There’s no denying that this is likely to be a stressful process. But there are some key steps you can take to ensure that you don’t lose your cool whilst trying to pick the perfect band for your bride-to-be.

Disregard the 3 month rule

There is general belief that men should set aside a whole three month’s salary for an engagement ring. This simply isn’t the case. More than anything, an engagement ring is a symbol of love and commitment to your partner, not a symbol of your own personal wealth. What matters is the gesture and the thought that goes into selecting the ring, not how many money you were able to set aside for it. And if the cost of the ring matters that much to your future partner, you have to wonder whether she is the right girl for you.

Make It a Surprise

It’s not uncommon these days to see prospective newlyweds accompanying each other to the jewellery store to choose an engagement ring. Of course this is fine if you’re not a romantic in the traditional sense. But does it not detract from the special occasion? The chances are your partner will be far more overjoyed if the first time she sees her ring is when you produce it out of the blue.

Determine the Ring Size

This is the of course the main downside to the surprise approach, as getting the ring size wrong can lead to a slightly awkward proposal. But there are ways to make sure that this doesn’t happen. See if you can find an existing ring in her jewellery box or even measure the diameter of her ring finger whilst she is asleep.

The Ring

Choosing the rings style and the diamond is a totally personal decision. Therefore not much advice can be given except that you go on instinct. You obviously know your wife-to-be very well, so don’t over think the choice: go with the ring that feels right and try not to question your instinct. If you need to get an idea of styles that you’re likely to encounter, you can do so at Diamonds and Rings.

Keep It Simple

The process of selecting a ring will no doubt be stressful to some degree. But If you follow the above steps, you will help to make the choice a much more simple and natural one.
