The recent summer heat has meant even the most body conscious have had to get their pins out, and alongside skimpy shorts and bikinis, trainers are out and strappy summer sandals are in – it’s time to let those tootsies breath! If you’re not a fan of feet, even your own, you’ll know how important it is that they are looking their best before being unveiled to the world. Untrimmed toe nails, chipped nail varnish and flaky heels are an instant turn-off and can be a real detraction from even the most stylish summer outfit. With that in mind, here are some top tips on how to ensure you have attractive summer feet:

Condition your feet

When you think about how much time you spend on your feet, it’s amazing how hardwearing they really are! However, feet are sensitive to the changes in temperature and moisture that summer brings, so make sure you give them the TLC they need. Be careful to dry between your toes properlyto avoid getting athletes foot and apply moisturiser after to keep them hydrated. If you have hard skin on your heels, soak your feet in warm water for ten minutes every few days to help soften the area, and then use a foot scrub and pumice to remove dead cells.

Trim and file

A pedicure is essential to attractive summer feet. You don’t need to spend money on a professional treatment though, instead opt for a simple DIY session. Begin by trimming your toenails straight across, smoothing with a nail file. This is easier done when nails are wet as they are softer and easier to cut. Use a cuticle oil on your toes, and gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick to keep nails in top condition. Next choose whether you want to go for a pretty colour or a natural look. Before you varnish always apply a base coat to prevent discolouration of the nail and add a glossy top coat to give a polished finishing touch at the end.

Go easy on the tan

Whether you’re spending hours out in the sun or opting for the FakeBake, go easy on the tan. When you’re outside, keep your feet well protected with sun cream. Feet always seem to tan more quickly than the rest of your body, but can easily burn too – which can be incredibly uncomfortable and not very appealing. With fake tans, be careful to thoroughly exfoliate your before use, umpaloompa feet are not a good look!

Pick the right sandals

When you’ve spent hours maintaining your feet, make sure you pick the right sandals to show them off. A nice pair of flip-flops will do the job by day – a very practical beach purchase – whilst by night opt for a pair of wedge sandals which will give the illusion of a slimmer ankle and longer leg. When you’re on the beach or sunbathing, take your shoes off and go bare feet to stop your feet getting sweaty.
