Real Wedding: Jennifer & Michael

Describe the proposal.

It was a really hot and long summer. Mike proposed at the end of June just before my final month of studying for the bar exam. We were home one evening and Mike kept bothering me about what I was studying and how many practice essays I had left.

As I got done, I settled down on the couch in our apartment to relax. Mike knelt beside the couch and pulled out a ring box and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said “yes.”

It was such a surprise to everyone-especially me! We had dated all through law school and it seemed more of a question of “when” rather than “if.” This was probably the only way Mike could’ve surprised me. I never thought he would propose during the bar! But having gone through it himself the year before, he knew it would be a nice surprise.

It really gave me something really great to look forward to after the test (celebrating and planning the wedding).

We followed a Caruso tradition of featuring a vehicle from the Carusos car collection in our wedding. Mike’s older brother used a 1967 Chevelle as the getaway car at his wedding.

The guys drove to the church and the reception in a 1954 Willys jeep owned by the Carusos and we posed by it after the ceremony.

The flowers were based on the wedding colors – pale blue & sage green. They were also based on our theme of vintage beach – or, “vintage seaglass,” what my Mama dubbed our wedding . I chose hydrangeas because I love the way they look. The florist suggested the ivory roses. I liked how they added a vintage romantic feel.

I requested daisies because I thought they made everything a little more playful. It turns out daisies were in my mother’s wedding bouquet (my mother passed away when I was 9 years old) which was a happy coincidence.

The wedding cake design was along the same lines as the flowers, in that we gave some general guidelines and let the bakers’ talent do the rest. Our cake from Sugar Sugar was absolutely the best! We picked the flavor – white chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse and raspberry mousseline.

We determined that we would like round tiers, white buttercream frosting (no fondant) and flowers. Sugar Sugar suggested the sugar flowers – hydrangeas in our colors. The best thing about our cake was that it tasted as good as it looked!

Jen: My most memorable moment was when I was walking down the aisle with my dad and I looked up and saw Mike, smiling and waiting for me at the end. Everything and everyone just melted away for me at that moment.

Mike: My favorite moments were slipping away with Jen during the party for a kiss and to bask in the beautiful (somewhat quiet) surroundings. It was nice to finally see her and be alone with her for a few brief moments on our day.
