Real Colorado Wedding: Katie & Scott

We met at Katie’s brother’s engagement party. When Scott saw me for the first time, he asked a friend who I was and when they told him I was his friend’s sister, he couldn’t believe it. He asked for my number, but I would only give him my email address.

I was working on my PhD in Iowa at the time and he lived in Texas, so I didn’t think he would really call me.We finally did talk on the phone and two weeks later, he flew to Chicago and then drove out to Iowa to take me out on our first date- very romantic!

Our flowers were soft, elegant, vibrant, alive, feminine, and classic. The bridal bouquet was made up of white roses, apricot tulips, orange and white ranunculus, green hypericum, greens and ivory stock tied with ivory ribbon and detailed with pearls and a family heirloom.

Describe the proposal. It was a Sunday morning and Scott told me that he had a surprise for me and to just “be ready to go” at 11:00 am. Just as we were pulling away from the house, he said he forgot something and ran back inside for a moment. Then, he took me to a very nice restaurant for brunch. While we were there, he told me he had something to give me. I was very nervous and excited, thinking he was going to propose.

He made me close my eyes and hold out my left hand where, instead of a ring, he placed tickets to a show I wanted to see. We enjoyed the rest of our brunch and I had resigned myself to thinking the proposal wasn’t going to happen that day. When we walked in the front door of the house, I was completely surprised to see two glasses on the table, a bottle of champagne, and a ring box. He dropped down on one knee and proposed!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? For us, it was the “first look.” We decided to see each other for the first time on our wedding day before the ceremony on the top of a mountain and have our celebrant perform a special blessing for our marriage. It was raining as we rode the gondola up to the top, but minutes before I stepped out of the gondola, it stopped and the sky was so beautiful.

I went to a scenic overlook and looked out over the mountains and waited for Scott. When he saw me, we both burst into tears of joy. The experience was absolutely magical and surreal.

We added some Jewish elements into the ceremony and reception: chuppah made of flowers and aspen trees, breaking of the glass, dancing the “hora”.

Our favoirte design element of the day was the colors. We wanted greens and browns to go along with the mountain theme and then we chose some other vibrant colors like coral and orange to accent and add life and a feel of celebration.

We also added some Native American elements: sage blessing, Navajo wedding vase, and Native wedding prayer.

We had heart shaped paper so our guests could give us “love letters” or advice on the keys to a successful marriage.

The food and drinks during the cocktail hour was our favorite detail from the day!

We had a signature cocktail, a “John Daly” (made with sweet tea vodka, lemonade, and mint), cheeseburger sliders, and mini grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup shooters.

Our wedding cake was decadent with two different flavors: chantilly cream with apricot filling and liqueur-soaked chocolate sponge cake with espresso and peanut butter cream filling.

Our pastry chef was truly an artist- he created four tiers with an ivory background and espresso-colored mountains, green textured trees and it was accented with apricot roses and ranunculus.

I must have tried on 100s of dresses! I thought I had narrowed it down, but I had a nagging feeling that I should go back to the original shop where I had found one that I loved at the very beginning – Priscilla of Boston.

When I went back, there was a new dress there that I hadn’t seen before and as soon as I tried it on, I knew that was the one!

What was the biggest help in planning your wedding?

Without question, we could not have had the wedding of our dreams without our fabulous wedding planner, Emily Campbell. Every design element was carefully considered with her help and expertise and we cannot emphasize that hiring a wedding planner was by far the best decision we made! She was worth every penny and then some!
